On the drive to Capernaum I read that this city is where Jesus spent 18 months of his 3 year ministry. HE moved here after Nazareth. Many miracles happened here. This site is where Peter's house was, which we know Jesus would have spent time there. Even likely lived there during much of his time in this city. This is Peter and the keys of the kingdom.
Looking out on the Sea of Galilee. Capernaum was one of nine cities surrounding the sea during Christ's time.
Sea of Galilee.
A map of the remains of Peter's home. In the 5th century they built an octagonal church over it, so it's a little tricky to decipher the difference on the map and in the remains (photo below).
More remains of Peter's village, right next to his home.
See the darker stone foundation below the lighter stones? Isn't that cool? If this was indeed where the synagogue was, then surely Jesus taught inside it. Wow.
Another building was built on top of the older foundation. Pretty impressive ruins.
I think this was an olive press found here.
Was this a cistern? Wish I could remember...
They built a church suspended on top of the site of Peter's home, which I appreciated them saving the remains just how they were. So many other holy sites are completely covered by huge and sometimes gaudy churches. This was a nice way to build a church to worship and commemorate the holy site, and also preserve the site itself.
Inside the church are many wood carvings of events in Jesus' life.
A happy Joni hand-in-hand with Grandma Joni.
I plucked a flower from this beautiful tree (felt just a bit guilty about that but some were already falling off anyway) to press in my scriptures in the Bible Dictionary under "Capernaum."
We drove and found a spot where you can hike down the rocks and actually touch the water in the Sea of Galilee! Mom filled a water bottle with Sea of Galilee water to bring home.
Joni loved cooling her feet in the water.
